"Treatment by a staff member."

About: Cairns Hospital / Mental Health Unit

(as the patient),

A staff member who was the team leader on the evening shift, I believe ignored my distressed state and conducted a very loud and in my opinion, very sexist mobile phone conversation in the ward. It seemed this staff member wouldn't let patients have the remote control for the TV and chose what they wanted to watch. I also believe that when this staff member wasn't being rude and abusive to patients, they ignored us. I have been told that this staff member is always like this and has been working (and I believe getting away with this behaviour) for a long time.  Why can't this person be sacked? I believe they are doing great harm to us all.

The following response had been published by Patient Opinion Australia on behalf of Cairns and Hinterland Mental Health and ATOD Service.

Dear Deeply distressed

Thank you for your feedback submitted online via the Patient Opinion website.

It was disappointing to read of your experience as it did not reflect the culture encouraged throughout the Cairns and Hinterland Mental Health and ATOD Service of kindness, compassion, respectful communications and professional management of care.

Although the Nursing Director of our Service was unable to identify the nurse involved, your experience will be tabled and discussed at staff meetings to highlight behaviours that are unacceptable and result in negative perceptions of interactions.

However, if you wish to have your experience reviewed, please contact our Patient Liaison Service who will be pleased to assist you on telephone (07) 4226 6864 or alternatively you can submit feedback online at: https://www.health.qld.gov.au/cairns_hinterland/html/feedback

As feedback is reviewed to identify opportunities for improvement, thank you again for taking the time to contact Patient Opinion.

Kind regards

Marie Kelly

Director, Cairns and Hinterland Mental Health and ATOD Service
