I developed a fairly severe staph infection in my face which caused on side of my face to become very swollen, red, sore and very hot. The doctor told me it was called cellulitis. It became worse so I presented to Emergency at Bass Coast Hospital. I was placed immediately on an IV antibiotic drip and moved to a ward where I was very well looked after by the fantastic nursing staff at Wonthaggi Hospital. The next morning my face had improved significantly with the swelling reducing and I was starting to feel normal again.
I was initially told I would need to stay in hospital on the Sunday as well and then I was offered the HITH service (hospital in the home) which meant I could finish my treatment at home by having a nurse coming to me and giving my IV drip at home. Of couse I jumped at it and must say what a wonderful service this is. The nurse, Janet, came out at about 1 pm to take my details and then returned at 5.30 promptly to do the IV. She was absolutely fantastic and extremely efficient, as well as being very pleasant.
By the next morning my face had improved even further and it was decided that a course of tablet form antibiotics was all I needed as I continue to improve.
All I can say is thank God this happened to me at our holiday home in Cape Paterson, as I doubt I would have received the same treatment and service in Melbourne.
If you are ever offered the HITH service do not hesitate to accept it."
