"After effects of colonoscopy"

About: Bentley Hospital / Day Surgery Unit

(as the patient),

After going to pre-admission recently the lady was very good and explained everything clearly and gave some informative reading material and made sure that all was understood in such a nice friendly manner.

The following day, a pain free, easy colonoscopy was performed and all went well. However I awoke with a sore, husky throat and could not eat all of the lovely sandwiches. I noticed other patients had no trouble eating and drinking, just me. But I gather in the leaflets, that after a couple of days or less, the sore throat would go away - but my throat got worse, to the point of being agony to swallow even some water and my jaw began to hurt. Not being able to drive, I waited until after the weekend to see my G.P. who looked and noticed that a tube or something had hurt the throat and gave me some antibiotics and noticed my temperature was just borderline normal to date. In the afternoons, the voice fades to a husky tone and my neck and jaw are still a source of worry to me. I do not have any appetite and have not eaten a good proper meal since a day or two before the colonoscopy.

I am now in a bind as to what to do as it is quite depressing to wake up to a heavy head, no appetite and not being able to sleep properly as the neck is still sore

I worked voluntary in a hospital for a few years and in the day surgery. There was always attentive staff around and as far as I know, nothing like my problem ever arose.

Dear Sore throat,

Thank you for taking the time to feedback and I am sorry that you have felt so unwell since your procedure. There are a variety of causes that may account for this. Would you please consider contacting me confidentially by telephone on 9224 2219 or by contacting the Royal Perth Hospital Consumer Engagement Unit via email at RPBG.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au? This will allow us to investigate your particular circumstances more fully and feedback with confidence regarding the cause and the potential need for us to re-review you.
