"A letter of thanks"

About: Wonthaggi Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I am an elderly patient who was recently admitted to Wonthaggi Hospital Emergency by ambulance.

I was very distressed and bewildered by the symptoms of having a stroke.

Immediately upon arriving in Emergency a team of nurses and doctors quickly started to attend to me, by removing my clothes, placing stickers all around my body and putting me in a hospital gown.   Various tests were carried out as I had lost vision in my left eye, I had a numb hand and arm and shaky left leg.  I had a CT scan and also an ultrasound on the arteries in my neck.  I realise speed is very important to diagnose a stroke, and the team were wonderful and very caring.  I knew I was in good hands with Dr. Greg and his team.  To also be hooked up to a video link with the Florey (Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health) and talk to a stroke specialist was amazing. In the end my symptoms started to subside and it wasn't necessary to send me to Melbourne.

Dear Stroke Patient,

Your story sent shivers through me - such a scary experience, but with a wonderful ending. It sounds like you were very lucky, but I also know that you were in very safe hands with Greg (a wonderful senior doctor) and our skilled ED staff. Our telemedicine link through to the Florey Institute means that we are able to connect our patients to a skilled neurologist 24/7 and since implementing this program a few months ago, it has benefited many locals. It is very reassuring to be able to access that specialist input so quickly and easily to our community. I hope that you have continued to be OK since your event, and I sincerely thank you for taking the time to provide us such lovely feedback.
