I had a 2-week routine checkup for my fractured calcneaous (heel bone) at Maroondah Hospital Outpatients. Two hours and 10 minutes in the waiting room.
Then saw the Consultant for less than 10 minutes. The first question was, Why are you here? I said that I had just had an x-ray of my fracture, two weeks after the injury. She looked at my x-ray and said, It's not much of a fracture you can hardly see it. ?
I said regardless of what it looks like, it was bloody sore. I was still taking Targin twice daily, with Endone for breakthrough pain. It was still extremely difficult to put weight on it. She then said, After 2 weeks, a fracture like this, you don't need the painkillers at all. Stop them as soon as you can, they are addictive.
I was and still am flabbergasted by the lack of compassion, empathy and skill of the Consultant! My understanding is you can't stop these types of tablets without withdrawals, which I felt she should know.
