"Confusion regarding information following surgery."

About: Bunbury Hospital

(as the patient),

Following recent shoulder surgery I found the information given by staff to be very confusing and a total overload of my still very affected brain. It was a week later before my mind totally cleared. Even after a follow-up visit to the Orthopaedic Clinic, I was none the wiser. Thank goodness for Daniel, the Senior Physiotherapist at Collie Hospital. His very patient manner and detailed explanation of what, why, where and more importantly for me, when I would be able to start driving and doing all the things one takes for granted for oneself. He put my mind at rest as to whether I'd been doing all or even some of the things I was meant to be doing. One issue I still have is I'm unable to find out what was used to knock me out in theatre, as I don't ever want to have it again.

Dear Confused,

Thank you for informing us of the problems you encountered following your recent surgery. You should have been given full instructions concerning your care prior to your discharge from hospital. These instructions should have been provided in writing if you were having memory problems at the time. Alternatively, with your permission, these instructions could have been provided to a friend or relative. I am sorry to hear you were having memory problems after the surgery. This can be experienced at times with the different medications that are used however we should have explained this to you and your family at the time.

It is very disappointing that you were not given further information at your outpatient follow up. This is not acceptable to the hospital and does not fit with our standards of care and I do apologise for this.

Please be reassured that I will follow-up with staff to ensure we provide better and informed discharge information to all patients.

It is reassuring that you received appropriate care and instructions from the physiotherapist at Collie.

I am willing to talk to you in more detail and provide the information on the drugs that were used that may have caused you to feel confused as this will be important information for any future operations.

I can be contacted by phone on 08 9722 1158.

Thank you for contacting us.

Dr Geoffrey Williamson.
