"Treatment at Bunbury Hospital"

About: Bunbury Hospital

(as the patient),

I was taken by ambulance from Pemberton to Bunbury Regional Hospital with severe abdominal pain which hadn't been diagnosed either at Pemberton or Manjimup Hospitals. The pain eventually abated after three days treatment.

The care I received at Bunbury was exemplary. From the ED to ward the reception was so positive, friendly and professional. All the staff from cleaners to medical, nursing and ancillary were kind and supportive. Although in pain I felt reassured that I was being cared for to the best of the hospital's ability and I'm sure that this feeling contributed to the successful medical outcome. A scan showed the presence of a stone in the left ureter. Other evidence suggested infection.

One small negative point which doesn't detract from the overall care. The 9.30 pm nurse changeover was quite noisy just outside my room, enough to waken me and keep me awake. I think that this important meeting should take place in a room not adjacent to patients' rooms.

Hi Merrilegs66

Thank you for your positive feedback about the care your received at Bunbury hospital, this is good to hear.

I will send on your compliments to the staff as they at all times aim to deliver the best care to all patients.

In relation to the noise at change of shift, at 9.30 pm, I advise that this was due to the clinical handover. The Nursing staff hand over care of the patients to the oncoming nursing staff. I will pass on your concern about the noise to the staff, so that they are aware of the disturbance caused and I apologise that you were disturbed. I’m sure the nursing staff can undertake this process, in a quiet manner, in future.

In regards to the handover of care, we do aim to have at least one handover a day, at the bedside with the patient involved (wherever possible) and with the patient’s consent.

It would be helpful for our service improvement to know if you were involved in a bedside handover about your care, while you were an inpatient, and if so, did it assist you to understand the care being provided?

I hope that your health is improving now that you are back home.

Jan Cook
