"Hand clinic experience"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / 2 West & Hand Clinic

(as the patient),

I was a patient at hand clinic Sydney Hand Hospital recently. I have witnessed something at hand clinic that I felt was so shocking I was gobsmacked. One patient turned up with no appointment. I heard the patient saying, they were a patient previously and their pain was getting worse. The patient mentioned they travelled about 3 hours to the hospital as they wanted to see a doctor desperately. The nice clerk asked the nurse in charge for a advice. The lady who seemed to be in charge spoke in a way that I felt was a very harsh tone - tell them we will see them today, but make sure they will be the last patient to see a doctor!

I was gobsmacked to hear this kind of statement in public hospital. She didn't even see the patient and I wondered how she can work as a nurse! Also I was concerned for other patient's safety. If this kind attitude comes from the nurse who is in charge of the hand clinic, how will she look after others? I was under the impression you need to see a patient before making a decision!

I just hope the patient is ok and I really hope not to witness this kind behaviour in Sydney Hand Hospital again.

Thank you very much for taking the time to let us know about this interaction you saw between another patient and a nurse in the Sydney Hospital Hand Clinic. Your description of events is disappointing, and not the kind of person-centred care that we aim to deliver in our facility. Your feedback has been handed over to the Nurse Unit Manager of this department, who will investigate further. I hope that you find all future appointments at the Hand Clinic to be far more satisfactory.
