I went to the emergency department for my heart condition SVT (Supraventricular tachycardia), I was also quite pregnant. The nurses and first attending doctor were great. However when it came time to administer the drug needed, the head doctor gave brief instructions to the learning doctor then left. I did not feel particularly comfortable with this as previously two doctors have attended the administration and it was clear the learning doctor had never done it before. The drug was given three times, however due to unclear instructions the learning doctor gave me less of the dose than she should have. When the head doctor returned (my SVT had stabilised after the third dose of the drug), he reprimanded the doctor in front of me. The nurses were quick to defend the learning doctor and pointed out that the head doctor should have stayed. The whole thing made me very uncomfortable as it felt as though the learning doctor did not feel able to ask the head doctor to stay/ make his instructions more clear. I believe a workplace culture where people do not feel comfortable asking more experienced colleagues questions is where big mistakes can be made. The learning doctor and the nurses were excellent in their interactions to me.
