"Exceptional nursing inpatient care"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / General Medicine Ward 10A Silver Chain

(as the patient),

I have had Silver Chain clinical care in the home for an extended period of time. Recently the nurse all but demanded I present at a hospital. Somewhat reluctantly I attended RPH expecting a short period of observation before being able to go home. With blood pressure and heart rate readings along with an infection, I was soon admitted to the hospital; all of this happened in quick succession following my arrival.

Over the next 36 hours, I was moved around until ending up in a bed in Ward 10A. I was to stay in this bed for about 2 weeks. My time in this ward was as good an experience as I could expect. Two nurses, in particular, made my stay a more comfortable and settled experience. Nurses Courtney and Mia showed an exceptional level of care and empathy not just for myself, but also to other patients that I observed. Both Courtney and Mia seemed to go out of their way to ensure I understood what was happening and continuously checked on my pain levels and my emotional state. One afternoon a serious event took place in the room concerning another patient. With the influx of people to deal with this situation, my anxiety levels rose dramatically and I felt the need to leave the room.

Even with all that was happening Courtney stopped me in the corridor to check my blood pressure and heart rate before allowing me to go off the ward. On my return a couple of hours later Nurse Courtney explained what I could expect when I re-entered the room and asked me to have the nurse in the room again check my heart pressure and blood rate. This gave me a sense of relief.

Nurse Mia also spent some time talking to me while dressing my foot and putting me at ease. While no one wants to spend time in hospital, for me these two nurses made my experience as comfortable and settled as possible. I would not fault any person on this ward. I would, however, like to commend Courtney and Mia for the exceptional level of care and empathy they showed me during my stay.

My journey has a way to go with Silver Chain making daily visits and while I have a long journey ahead I believe my current state of mind and self-care can be put down to the attitude and actions of Courtney and Mia.

Dear Captain Grumpy 13,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Royal Perth Hospital. It is always great to read of the positive experiences that patients and their families experience at the hands of our clinicians and it is even more pertinent this week as we have been celebrating International Nurses and Midwives Day.

One of the areas we have been giving special attention to of late is our communication with patients and their carers to try and ensure that we keep them informed of what tests we are doing, the outcomes and why we are doing them. It’s good to read that the two nurses you mentioned on 10C have excelled in this area.

We are proud of the work we do here at RPH and once again I thank you for taking the time to share your experience which I will be forwarding on to Courtney and Mia.

I hope you are recovering well and wish you all the best

Sincerely

Dr Aresh Anwar
