I attended Busselton Emergency Department recently. We arrived just after 8.30pm and as the doors are locked from 8.30pm onwards, I had to press an intercom button to be let in. The intercom rang out numerous times for the next 15 minutes. It was only due to a nurse coming on duty who let us in that we got into the Emergency Department.
When I told the Triage Nurse we had been out there for 15 minutes they looked quizzically at their phone and then continued to process us to see the doctor. When we were leaving the Emergency Department there was another person outside who had been waiting for someone to answer the intercom for half an hour.
Luckily my situation wasn’t life-threatening, but I shudder to think what would have happened if anyone with a life-threatening situation had arrived and not been able to get in.
While I have no complaints about the staff, I do need to bring to your attention this very flawed system set up for entry into the Emergency Department.
