Sydney Eye Hospital Emergency Department

(as a relative),

I took my husband to the Emergency Dept of Sydney Eye Hospital in the early hours of the morning. There are no eye doctors on duty from 8.30pm until 8.30am.

There was a non eye doctor there who told my husband he thought he had conjunctivitis, but come back to see an eye doctor after 8.30am.

Having seen an eye specialist locally the next day, my husband has recurrent corneal erosion syndrome.

I do not understand why there is an Emergency Department at Sydney Eye Hospital without an eye doctor on duty 24/7.

Dear D1,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your husband’s recent experience in the Sydney Hospital/Sydney Eye Hospital Emergency Department (ED). I understand that you and your husband would have found it frustrating to arrive in our ED hoping to see an eye doctor, only to find that one is not on duty between 2100 and 0800.

All ED doctors are able to assess and treat patients presenting with general eye conditions. There are eye doctors on call, who will come into the hospital and see urgent patients throughout the night to ensure no patients are at risk of losing sight.

I apologise that we did not meet you and your husband’s expectations during his recent visit, and trust that he is making a speedy recovery.

I hope you find any future visits to the ED more satisfactory.
