"The Angliss Hospital"

About: Angliss Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Recently one night I presented to the ED with my very sick and very young baby. My baby was triaged with a high temp and unwell. We didn't wait very long to go into a cubicle. The nurse that dealt with us was fantastic, kind and caring as was the paediatric doctor. I explained everything that was happening with my baby. They checked my baby out (but never looked in my baby's ears or throat). They took their obs for a while. Then we were discharged and told to keep on top of the temp with panodol and/or nurofen. They were unsure of what it could be. I was told to see a GP if my baby didn't get better in the next 24hrs. So I left and the poor thing just kept getting temps and was in a hell or a lot of pain and discomfort. A couple of nights later I spoke with a nurse on call who advised us to get a locum out to check my baby's nose and throat as the hospital never did. The locum came and within 5 minutes diagnosed my baby with tonsillitis. Tonsils were red, swollen and covered in pus. Hence the reason for the temps. I'm absolutely appalled that the doctor never checked my baby's nose and throat. My baby was made to suffer when I believe the doctor would have seen the problem had he bothered to check and given my baby the appropriate care. I'm local to the Angliss, but I will never again send any member of my family there. I will travel to Box Hill.

Dear Worried Mother

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your baby in the Emergency Department at Angliss Hospital. I would like to apologise that your experience was not at the level we would all expect.

I understand you have also made contact with the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience via our website. Thank you for doing this as I would like to make sure we fully investigate the care you and your baby received.

Having a sick baby is certainly a real worry and I hope your baby's health has improved following the locum visit.

Through feedback such as yours we are able to review our services and make any necessary improvements, so thank you again Worried Mother for sharing your experience.

Kind regards

David

Update posted by Worried Mother (a parent/guardian)

Thank you for your response David. I do really hope that it is looked into, so that no other baby or anyone for that matter has to go through what my 4 month old did. Sometimes the basics are overlooked and shouldn't be.

Regards

Worried Mother
