"Attended emergency - pregnant and bleeding"

About: Armadale Hospital / Emergency Department

(as other),

Went to emergency with my girlfriend. She is 10 weeks pregnant and she started bleeding and she was stressing as this is her first child. She didn’t get looked at for well over an hour and when she did she had her blood pressure tested, then sent back out into the waiting room for another 2 hours. Not impressed. I believe a woman bleeding looks like it could lead to losing the baby. What a joke. She was in pain and it seems they would rather look at people that don’t have anything wrong with them and they should go and see a local GP.

Dear Bombers

Thank you for getting in touch with me, it is really appreciated.

Firstly I want to say I am so very sorry that you and your girlfriend had such a distressing experience.

Myself, the senior medical staff and senior nursing staff all agree with you. The waiting room is not a good environment for a woman who is bleeding in pregnancy.

Your very sad story has triggered the team to look at alternate options for urgent access to appropriate care and a more sensitive environment for women who present to the Emergency Department moving forward. I cannot imagine how you felt as it must have been awful.

Pregnancy is a very special time for any woman and we apologise we were not able to provide you with the support and care during what must have been a very anxious time for both of you.

We are fully committed to providing the best possible patient care and are keen to follow up the concerns you have raised.

If you would like to get in touch with us to have an expanded discussion, you can arrange a face-to-face meeting by contacting our Consumer Liaison Officer on (08) 9391 1153 or email AKG_ConsumerLiaision@health.wa.gov.au.

Best wishes
