"My very elderly dad"

About: Busselton Health Campus / Emergency Department Margaret River Hospital

(as a relative),

My dad was admitted to Busselton Hospital due to being weak in his legs and not feeling well. My dad has terminal cancer. I had a meeting with a beautiful doctor who explained how progressed the cancer was and said we needed to put Dad in a nursing home. This was organised straight away and the hospital where told of the process being put into place for my dad to go into William Carey. The long weekend was coming up and the hospital asked me to move my father to Margret River Hospital. This turned out to be a disaster. My father cried every day and just wanted to come back to Busselton. I realise that Busselton has to look after sick patients, but when I went into the hospital to look for my dads toilet bag the hospital wards where empty. My point is that my dad spent 5 days in Margret River Hospital, which is lovely, crying to come back to Busselton. He might not be with us much longer and the suffering he has had to go through is very unfair, he is a very elderly man.

Dear About my dad

Thank you for taking the time to post on Patient Opinion. I am very sorry that your father was distressed while he was in Margaret River Hospital and we would certainly appreciate the opportunity to talk to you about whether there were any aspects of his care that contributed to this that we could improve on.

It sounds like the staff in Busselton explained to you the rationale for transfer to another site given the potential demands on the hospital heading into the long weekend. It is difficult to predict this demand and while it was not as busy as expected over the weekend, we endeavour to be prepared for the influx which inevitably comes with winter and the flu season. Please be assured that we consider feedback such as yours as an opportunity to improve our processes and the service we provide to the community and I am happy to talk this through with you if you would like to give me a call on 9753 6371.

Thank you once again for taking the time to post this feedback
