I recently had a cardio event, Atrial Fibrillation, brought on by being very physically sick (vomiting, cold sweats, weakness). I did not think this was heart attack. I was taken to emergency where I was well cared for and a cardio reversal was performed to put the heart back in sinus rhythm. I was kept in overnight for obs and allowed to go home the next day. As this has happened (2 times) previously, I felt I had a good understanding of my situation and would recover quickly, as previously. My cardiologist planned for a cardiogram to be performed just as a safeguard but did not expect any problems, 2 years earlier my results were clear. This time they found a 90% blockage. Back in for a stent. I was visited by a cardio nurse who offered and recommended I attend a cardio rehab program. To be honest, I did not think I would benefit from this. I am 68, reasonably fit, non-smoker, not overweight, I have am still working and always worked through the problems thrown up at me (tough guy).
My wife (carebear) absolutely demanded I go on the program. I am really glad I did, instead of toughing it out with my emotions and recovery on my own. The staff have been fantastic, very caring, very patient and very informative. The value of mixing with a group of strangers who have all experienced such a life-changing event and being supportive of each other with group discussions and gym workouts where we have a chat an even a bit of humour, cannot be overstated. Both the gym time and the information sessions have been of great value in my recovery. I did not realise how sick I had actually been (denial). Many thanks to all the fantastic Cardio Rehab team at the Angliss. 1 session to go. Feeling better every day.
