Hospital Parking

(as a parent/guardian),

My child has been in Kind Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) and Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) hospital since birth. We have now been in hospital for 19 weeks and were recently moved to the new Perth Children’s Hospital on opening day. Since moving, each day to be with our child it is costing us just under $20 a day in parking. Whilst we do receive one $5 flat rate ticket each day it still costs us more as my husband comes in the evening after work and has to pay $3. 30 for each hour he is here (not even pro rata). This is not reasonable or affordable for us especially when we need to be here every day under circumstances we did not choose. I don’t understand how families can go from paying 60c an hour to $3. 30 an hour in such a vulnerable situation. I’m sure there are other families in the same boat and don’t think that charging such extreme rates is ethically right. They need to do something about this particularly when we are going to be in hospital for some time.

Dear Parking Anger

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback about the cost of parking at PCH. I’m really sorry that parking is costing your family so much.

The charges for parking at public hospitals are set in accordance with the Department of Health’s Metropolitan Access and Parking Strategy, which establishes parking charges for metropolitan hospital sites. As PCH is located at the QEII Medical Centre, PCH has inherited the parking scheme that has been in place for some time at QEII.

We have established a parking concession scheme as we recognise that parking fees can pose a financial burden for some parents and families whose children have complex healthcare requirements resulting in them having to attend the hospital frequently. I understand that it does not resolve the issue, but we hope it helps.

As parking concessions are an initiative of the hospital directly, we sincerely appreciate you understanding that the hospital must be mindful that any costs incurred in any parking concessions do not detract from our primary goal of providing care to our patients.
