"Fitzroy Crossing Hospital"

About: Fitzroy Crossing Community Health Service Fitzroy Crossing Hospital Fitzroy Crossing Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

As there was no sexual health nurse available (position vacant) I booked in with a doctor for an STI screening. During the consult I was given the pathology paperwork and told to go and find a particular nurse to do the bloods. The hospital was chaos and the nurse for bloods had finished her shift, but was still attending to patients. I was left to stand around not sure what was happening. Finally the doctor appeared and said come back another day to get the pathology done. After the second visit and the pathology was done, I was told someone would call me regarding the results. A month passed and no one contacted me. I phoned reception and asked how to get results and the receptionist said that she wasn’t even sure, maybe book in with a doctor in the times they had free. I said that surely they could just call me for the results, but she said she didn’t know how the doctors work and an appointment is the only way.

This is extremely frustrating as I already had to come back twice to get the bloods done and then now a third time for the results. I work in health so my level of health literacy and confidence in accessing a service is high but what about the general public? In my opinion, the way the hospital operates is so uncoordinated and inaccessible to the general public, not to mention degrading in the whole triage set-up, but that’s another story.
After this experience I feel frustrated and annoyed at the system. With STI rates so high in the Kimberley, why is it not easier to access a test, let alone access your results. What if someone lives out of town and has no transport or phone service.

Dear lionjp77

Thank you so much for telling us about your experience in Fitzroy Crossing Hospital. I am sorry you had this frustrating experience which we don't want to repeat for you or any other patients, and we are planning a change.

The good news is the vacant sexual health nurse role is now filled and patients can see this nurse without having to go through the emergency triaging process. The sexual health nurse is available via Community Health, their contact number is 9166 1727.

Getting pathology results through the GP is clearly problematic at present, but this is where we want to improve the process at Fitzroy Crossing Hospital. Your story has prompted us to trial SMS messaging. These messages will ask patients to make a follow-up appointment to discuss pathology results with the sexual health nurse or GP. This has been trialled successfully in the Midwest and we plan to work with them develop a process that is going to suit this community.

It is through stories about patient experiences such as yours, that we make change that will impact others and improve the delivery of health services. Thank you again for sharing your story, we will keep you informed by updates on this website of our progress.

Kind regards,

Rachele Ferrari

Dear lionjp77

We are working on making the change described in our last response to you. At the moment we have received information from another region in WACHS regarding their SMS messaging service and are now working on a project plan to introduce this service locally.

We will keep you updated on the progress of this planned change.

Kind Regards,

Robyn Gibson
