My mother recently had a fall at home and sustained a fractured pelvis and a lacerated wrist. During her admission to AHC she was transferred to the Sub Acute Ward. The general nursing care she received whilst there was excellent. There are however a couple of small improvements that could have made her stay more comfortable.
The white board that has the day of the week and the nurse on shift name was rarely updated, this meant that my mother and visiting family did not know who her primary care nurse was for any given shift, so they did not know who to discuss information with. When the board was updated 'today' would be written on one of the days but as the board would then not be changed 'today' became confusing. Fortunately my mother doesn't have dementia, but being in hospital, unwell and in pain can make the days slip by without realising.
Several days after being discharged from hospital my mother asked me what she should do about the dressings she had on her arms (one on the lacerated wrist wound and a second dressing on her other arm). There were no instructions in her discharge advice and when I asked her about the second dressing she told me it was from a cut caused by her hospital ID band. When I removed the dressing there was a sloughy wound approximately 1.5 x 1.5 cm (at a right angle). The wound was cleansed and redressed however it would have been good to know in advance that this wound may need attention. The dressing was removed from the lacerated wrist wound sustained in her fall and it had healed beautifully.
