"Getting help at home"

About: Bunbury / Harvey / Leschenault Community Health Service

(as the patient),

Over the years I have been admitted to hospital numerous times due to my health conditions. I was recently admitted to the kiddies ward due to the hospital being full.  The staff were absolutely marvellous there - praise! praise! And they suggested I might need a little bit of help at home, which I was probably in denial... just felt I must be getting older.

But when I left the hospital I spoke to my dietitian (Leanne) regarding diet issues and she also suggested I could do with a little bit of help at home regarding aids. She got onto the OT department which sent out Catherine and she had a look around and said she could help with some of the issues that I was concerned with. Her suggestions of ramps at patio doors, a shower rail, and a toilet rail, would help me. She also said to think about any other concerns I had, because she may be able to assist with those too.

Then she got the ball rolling and within 2 weeks a gorgeous man came out with the pieces and fitted them in no time at all, and was as friendly as ever and very professional. He fitted everything well and checked carefully with me. He also said all of these things would really help me. Everything that they have suggested and done... they were absolutely right!

This equipment has given me more confidence to feel safer at home.

Anyone thinking of not trying these aids should think twice!!  Believe me, you will realise just how important they are.

They all made me feel I was very genuine in my need. They obviously do this job a lot... they see the person... and understand what is necessary. xxx

Dear decemberfb47

Thank you for your compliment of our Allied Health Team- Leanne the Dietician, Catherine the Occupational Therapist and Steve our Carpenter.

Our Occupational Therapy team at Bunbury Hospital take safety and falls prevention in the home very seriously and it was great to see they were so helpful for you and that the home assessment and installation of rails in your shower and toilet gave you confidence. We hope that you will remain safe, happy and independent in your home.

Thanks again for your wonderful feedback and I have passed it on to all the team and also thank you for posting on Patient Opinion.
