"New fathers"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

At the birth of my child, like previous times, I feel like I'm treated as a 2nd class citizen. I have always been told to leave which in my opinion is wrong. I don’t care what the 'books' say, dads should have just as much of a right to be with their partners and child/ren.

Dear waterpd37

Thank you for sharing your story and congratulations on the birth of your new child. Please accept our sincere apologies that your experience at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) did not meet your expectations.

FSH Maternity staff welcome father and family involvement and we are aware it is difficult for new fathers to leave their loved ones out of hours. However the booklet ‘Patient Information Having Your Baby at Fiona Stanley Hospital’, provided to all maternity patients, explains that while FSH strongly encourages a support person to stay with the mother during labour, there are no overnight facilities for partners or support people to stay once the mother has had the baby, hence our visiting hours of 8am to 8pm.

If you wish to discuss this further, the Patient and Family Liaison Service at FSH welcomes all feedback (compliments, suggestions, concerns and complaints), their contact details are 6152 4013 or email fshpatientfamilyliaison@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards

Janet Zagari, Executive Director, Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group
