"What a contrast."

About: Bunbury Hospital

(as the patient),

I was a patient in at St John of God Bunbury for a Knee Reconstruction. I didn't find the care to be very good, it was not what I expected when you are paying top dollar. The staff didn't introduce themselves - mainly the night staff. They would come in to give me medication, they didn't introduce themselves and weren't friendly at all. On one occasion, I asked if I could have a cup of tea and the nurse told me there was a coffee machine down the corridor.

After I was discharged, I developed an infection in my toe - I'm a diabetic. From the moment I arrived I found the care to be faultless. The nurse who admitted me introduced herself and was very friendly. She asked me if I wanted something to eat - she would go and get it. She also offered my wife something to eat. At first my wife declined, but the nurse said, no you'll be here for while I'll get you something to eat. I was so shocked. She brought back sandwiches and for both of us and also offered us tea or coffee. The nurse then offered to show my wife around. My wife said the nurse showed her where everything was, even the coffee machine.

The doctor was fantastic. He referred me quickly to the Royal Perth Hospital. Normally we would have to wait months for a visiting specialist. Some people asked me how I got an appointment in Perth so quickly and I told them the doctor was great and made it all happen so fast.

The nurse even held my hand while I had the local anaesthetic. I told her I would be okay, but she said, no it'll hurt so I'll hold your hand. In the few hours I was there we were treated incredibly well. I was so shocked at the difference in care at the Bunbury Regional Hospital. It was so good.
