"3.5 years and still waiting..."

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital

(as the patient),

Fiona Stanley Hospital Plastics Clinic has a referral for me that they triaged as a Category 3.

Category 1's are within 30 days, Category 2's are within 90 days and Category 3's are within 365 days. My referral has been sitting there now for roughly 1285 days! Over three and half years later... I'm still waiting on an appointment for my ever growing cyst on my face/cheek.

I even went to see a General Surgeon at a different hospital a year and a half ago and he sent them a semi urgent escalation and still nothing changed.

I contacted Customer Liaison and was told there's no point in putting in a complaint with them or even with the Minister for Health as it won't change a thing. She spoke to someone in the Plastics Clinic and was told they're only making appointments for Category 1's. No time for anyone else so I lost all hope of ever getting an appointment.

I have now resorted to going back to see a General Surgeon at a different hospital again because at this point.. it seems my only options are getting it cut out by a general surgeon and possibly having a not very nice scar on my face or waiting forever for a plastic surgeon to do it at FSH and ending up with a tennis ball size cyst on my face!

So disappointed and disgusted with the (what I feel is a lack of) service from Fiona Stanley. If only I had the money to get it done privately, but unfortunately I don't.

Dear apusgq34

Thank you for sharing your story. I understand your frustration waiting for an appointment. Appointments are always prioritised based on clinical urgency, and within urgency categories, patients are scheduled in order of referral. The plastics clinic receives many urgent referrals for conditions such as cancer, and these take priority over non-urgent referrals.

If your condition changes, please see your GP who can contact us to update the urgency if clinically required. In the case of an emergency, please attend the emergency department.

If you feel your concerns have not been fully addressed you may contact the Health and Disability Services Complaints Office (HaDSCO) on 6551 7600 to request an independent review of your complaint. Further information can be obtained from the HaDSCO website.

Kind regards

Janet Zagari
