In my opinion this was not a great experience. Firstly the nurses looking after me spoke a different language (which is fine as they could also speak okay English). So whilst they were outside my room I heard one updating the other two about my case and then all of a sudden they started speaking their native tongue and had a good yarn for about 15 minutes... I think this is very unprofessional, how am I to know what they are saying, seeming as the last person they were talking about was myself this made me feel like my confidentiality could have been breached.
Also I needed a drip, 4 attempts were needed which happens and I understand that, but out of these 4 attempts the junior doctor only swabbed 1 site, he didn't wear gloves for any of the attempts and he didn't hand hygiene once or wipe down his equipment. I had a family member with me and saw the IV trolley go between 2 other patients and no wipe down of equipment occurred. This is so disgusting! I am in acute pain and I am already trying to distract myself due to having a needle, I shouldn't have to remind a doctor to follow basic med school protocols.
Overall not impressed, I feel I was basically forgotten about. Another family member needed to go remind the nurse the IV bag had finished and I was feeling better as I was presenting for a chronic condition. The junior doctor then came back and took the IV out with no gloves again. Handed me a paper towel and gave me the after care advice of keeping pressure for 30 seconds, which I did. So took the paper towel off and blood starts dripping down my hand and jumper - how hard is it to get a band-aid?
