A health consumer called complaining about what she believes was unfair treatment in the Emergency Department at St John of God Midland Hospital after being in an MVA (motor vehicle accident). She has explained that her pain wasn’t controlled and they refused to admit her or refer her for ongoing care at St John of God Murdoch, even though she has full private hospital cover. Therefore the patient feels she was unfairly discharged from emergency the same day. As a result of this decision, the patient explained that she was in severe spinal pain for three days until she readmitted herself to SJOG Murdoch.
The patient was kept there for 7 days. During the admission at SJOG Murdoch, the health consumer said that she believes there was a breach of her privacy. The details given was that a lawyer called the hospital four times whilst the patient was having an examination. From the patient's understanding, eventually, a staff member told the lawyer that the patient was admitted to the hospital, as well as when and why they were admitted. Once the patient was told about the call, they complained about a breach of their privacy. The patient believes that, due to wanting to know details of the call, they were subsequently prematurely discharged due to making a complaint, while still suffering in severe pain. She feels that her privacy has been breached and the right to her continued access to medical care was compromised. The health consumer would also like to know the details of the private information that was given during the phone conversation.
