"Left the hospital very upset."

About: Kerang Hospital

(as the patient),

I went to Kerang Disrict Health for a pre operation appointment. Margy and Courtney were delightful, respectful and kind. The Doctor, I felt was judgemental and rude. He assumed because I was big that I was a guts that I smoked and I was uneducated. I felt humiliated, hurt and very upset. I had to wait out in the waiting room and he said he would get back to me. After 30 mins he came out and in front of all the other people he told me he would do the operation if I lost weight.

I left the hospital very upset and felt hugely degraded.

Dear Humiliated and Upset,

Thank you for your posting. I am very grateful to you for taking the time to feed back your experience. I am also thrilled that you have mentioned that Margy and Courtney were respectful. Respect is one of our values, and so it is fabulous that this is what you felt from these staff.

I am disappointed that you felt the Doctor was judgemental and rude, and that he spoke to you in front of other people regarding a personal issue. I expect all staff to be caring and respectful and that in particular the senior staff should be leading by example. I will ensure that your comments are fed back.

I believe the process at the preadmission clinic is that patients are taken in to a private consulting room for their conversations with nurses and doctors, and I will follow up with the preadmission clinic staff about why this did not occur in this instance.

We do have guidelines on what Body Mass Index a patient needs to be for them to have their procedures locally, however, again there is a way that this can be spoken about and discussed with people so that it is supportive. Again, I will address this with the preadmission clinic staff about their processes for discussing sensitive issues in an appropriate way.

If you think there is anything that I can do to help please do not hesitate to contact me on either 03 54509210, or ckeogh@kerhosp.vic.gov.au

Thank you again for your feedback.

Best wishes.
