I was appalled and embarrassed to see that the cafe at SJOG Midland has no price list.
While I was there visiting, I overheard people worrying that they didn't have enough money for lunch. They were looking in their wallets, trying to guess how much things might be and whether they had enough money for food. It felt like people were being forced into overspending. People should be able to make informed purchases, not have to walk up to the till, ask how much something is, then admit they can't afford what it is they want/spend more than they can afford to avoid embarrassment.
I asked the girl at the till why there were no prices listed. Her response was that the menu changes too frequently to have listed prices. I feel this is a very poor excuse. Someone had to write - Bagel with chicken, pesto and sun-dried tomato - on a little card, surely it's not that hard to write $9.50 next to that? The girl on the till was able to quickly and easily type in the item and be given a total price; if a current price is coded into the computer at the till, there's no reason why the price can't be listed next to the item.
Especially at a public hospital, people should not be put in a position of finance related embarrassment and awkwardness.
I look forward to this simple problem being resolved.
