"Discharged too early"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as the patient),

I am booked in for 4 week drainage of my stomach. I received a letter to come in, but when I did there was no bed for me. I was put in a big room with lots of people. I waited there the whole day before I was given a bed.

I had the drainage done at night time - 10 litres was drained. The night nurse was supposed to take the needle out at 4 am, but she came and took it out at 8 am.

I felt extremely weak and when the doctor came to see me I asked if I could stay longer and he said yes. But as soon as he left the nurse came in and told me I could get dressed and go home. I was so weak, I could hardly get dressed. They could have at least got the orderly to come and walk with me down the corridor so I could find my feet before, just sending me home. When I went to leave, I believe they thought I was going to another hospital. The orderly who walked me out was very pleasant.

I have to have this done again in another 4 weeks and I'm really worried. You have to have this done to really understand. I feel very weak. I think they really botched up.

Dear Botched up

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience whilst an inpatient at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH). It was very disappointing to read of the lack of compassion and support you experienced and the distress that this caused. The care you describe is not in keeping with the expectations and values of our service and I would like to offer you my sincere apologies.

I completely appreciate your worry regarding your future appointments and encourage you to contact our Patient Liaison Service (SCGH) on (08) 6457 2867 so that we are able to obtain further details to assist us with ensuring this does not happen again.

Once again, I wish to express my sincere apologies and hope that you will be happy to contact us.

Kind regards

Geraldine Carlton
