"My post-caesarean experience"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital

(as the patient),

Over two years ago, after my caesarean, I was wheeled into ICU where I was closely monitored as I had pre-eclampsia. During this time, while I was sleeping, a male who I believe wasn’t a nurse, he was one of the people who deliver food and empty the bins, accompanied by a female nurse came into my room. They proceeded to strip me and wash my naked body down without my permission. I was not asked if this is what I wanted. I’d showered that morning and would’ve been able to shower myself the next day. My partner sat on a chair in the corner and we met each other’s eyes. His eyes were wide in shock, just like mine. To this day I am disgusted and feel physically sick and angry when I think about it.

Dear gammerz63

Thank you for sharing your story about your experience in the Fiona Stanley Hospital Intensive Care Unit. I was very sorry to hear of the distress you experienced at the time and the ongoing trauma this is causing.

Unfortunately, without your details, we are unable to investigate the specific circumstances and find out why this occurred. I encourage you to contact the Fiona Stanley Hospital Patient Family Liaison Service on 6152 4013 or via email: FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au, to enable us to investigate.

It is usual for ICU Nursing staff to provide hygiene care for patients, because patients are very unwell. The nurses should have explained to you what they were going to do and gained your consent before washing you. The staff in the ICU strive to make patients as comfortable as possible and provide a high level of holistic healthcare. In your circumstance I recognise that this was not the case and I apologise for this

I do encourage you to contact us so that we can investigate and perhaps arrange to meet with you to discuss.

Kind regards

Janet Zagari

Executive Director, Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group
