"Oncology Chemo Day Ward QEII"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Cancer Centre

(as the patient),

I have been a client of the Chemotherapy Day Ward on a regular basis since early this year and just want to formally let all the staff know how safe I feel in my journey. I have worked in the medical profession for many years in a wide variety of settings, so feel well qualified to comment on many levels. I was very unwell at the beginning of my journey and my diagnosis came way out of left field. I felt very frail and was running out of resilience, my family were very worried. We all received excellent support by Dr Kevin who guided us with important clinical decisions about my care and monitored me closely. At the commencement of chemo it was all about putting one foot in front of the other and just doing what you have to do. Over the months as I have improved I have had plenty of time to reflect on my personal care as well as observe the goings on of the ward. The staff are fabulous - front desk girls are kind, courteous and patient.  It is nice to get to know the nursing staff, they are personable, compassionate and care about your personal story while displaying excellent clinical skills. The ward is always busy.  This is so important when you are relying on the drugs they are infusing which are so potent. The environment feels safe, calm and containing.  The cleaners are thorough and consistent, the catering staff are very obliging. Pharmacy staff have all been diligent and supportive. All of these factors have supported me to have a positive journey. Friday is my Charlies day and they feel part of my “family.”

Dear Grateful and Humble

Thank you so much for sharing your recent experience of the Chemotherapy Day Ward at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH). It was so pleasing to read of the compassionate and supportive care you received during your treatment. I can only imagine how daunting it must have been for you to receive the news of your illness and manage your treatment when feeling so unwell. Our motto at Charlie’s is to ‘put patient’s first’ and I am very glad that this was how you were made to feel, and that the staff played such a pivotal role in helping you through this journey.

I know that the staff involved in your care will be thrilled to read your message of thanks and to know that you considered them part of your ‘Charlie’s family’; and I will ensure this is passed onto them.

Thank you again for your kind message and I wish you the best for on.

Kind regards

Geraldine Carlton
