"Maroondah Hospital"

About: Maroondah Hospital

(as the patient),

I had a cannula in my left arm and was told by a nurse that it had to be changed, he was teaching another nurse how to do it. As he instructed the nurse he was looking for the best place to insert the cannula which was on top of my right hand. I requested not to as I had previously had a painful experience, he persisted and gave the nurse instruction to carry on. I asked him again why he is so persistent he answered, because I can. I felt intimidated ! During the night the pain became so bad that I asked for the cannula to be removed which was done.

On discharge, in my opinion he made an insulting remark to other people in the room about me and my wife, trying to be funny.

Dear Noge

Thank you so very much for taking the time to share comments regarding your experience at Maroondah Hospital on Patient Opinion.

I'd like to apologise that the nurse didn't listen to your request for the intravenous cannula to be inserted in your right hand and also for the other comments made. I can appreciate why you felt intimidated given you raised your concerns and these were not taken into account / explained to you why this location for the cannula was needed.

I will share your feedback with the leaders for the services at Maroondah Hospital so they can use it as a learning experience for all staff regarding the importance to actively listen to patients and families.

I hope you are recovering well as a result of your stay in hospital.

Kind regards

David

Dear David,

Thank you for your response. I wasn't looking for an apology, I was torn should I should I not. The other nurses prompted me to say all that you can learn from it. This was the only complaint I had. I do not want the matter taken any further, I'm happy with your response.

Overall the medical treatment excellent, cleanliness of the ward was good (if something was not correct I had only to ask and it was corrected), the food was good and tasty.

Yours sincerely

Noge
