"Quality of care"

About: Oberon Village

(as a parent/guardian),

Living so close to the facility I was able to visit often, daily, sometimes three or four times daily. During these visits I often found my mother in a urine soaked pad and at times her bed was also soaked in urine.

Meals where missed on the occasions that they could not make it to the dining room.

I was told by staff that Sustagen couldn’t be given to my parents without it being written up by a doctor.

My mother was often dressed in a manner that allowed her breast to be seen through her clothes, this was after a lot of emails and discussions with management regarding this.

A request to have my mother ready to attend my father's funeral was ignored, she was showered the evening prior by my sister. Our only ask was that her breakfast and dressing be completed by 10 am. I arrived to collect her to find her still in bed, causing us to be late for our father's funeral.

We transferred our mother to a top of the range facility, asked for transfer papers to be completed. This was done, but it was done for the wrong resident... stating clearly on the transfer that my mother had all her teeth, she had dentures for over 40 years. Simple task I would have thought, but this and many other errors on transfer.

Thank you for your comments. We note that you referred your concerns to the Aged Care Complaints Commissioner earlier this year and the case was resolved.

We also note the concerns expressed and welcome your assistance to take note of the following facts and lobby your local member to resolve industry wide issues, particularly in rural and regional areas of Australia;

Yes my case was referred to the Aged Care Commission and no I don’t think it was resolved. I believe a lack of leadership is a major problem at the Oberon facility.

I felt there was a huge lack of compassion from the home during a very difficult time... I suggest that your management get off their chairs and see what is going on in this facility. I will never lobby for more funds for care homes while millions of dollars in profit are declared. In my opinion, it’s not funding that’s needed, it’s you as operators that need to be accountable for those funds. It's my understanding that no other for profit business in Australia receives the tax payers funds as aged care does.

In my opinion, you as humans need to acknowledge that these bad experiences effect families left behind for years.... and hopefully once the Royal Commission has been on, the operators of these businesses will be held accountable for what happens.
