My child had routine surgery while at Broome Hospital and while the care from all staff was amazing the facilities not so much. We were moved to a four beded room in the paediatric ward for an overnight stay. I noticed there were a few single rooms still available. What was inappropriate was that my young child and the young child next door were placed in a room with two pre-teen children and their intoxicated parents. All 8 of us were sharing one bathroom and with the very uncomfortable fold out beds for the boarders there was very little room for anyone to move around. I also felt for everyone in the room as my little one is a bit of a screamer and kept the lot up during the night. In my opinion, some serious updating needs to be done throughout the wards of the hospital, as I’ve noticed these four beded rooms are really only made for the maximum of two beds. I also think in this instance age appropriate allocation of beds needs to be considered more as two children under the age of 5 should not be sharing a room with two children aged 13+. I would also like to add that these intoxicated parents should have not have been allowed to stay in the room with these young children. The smell of booze and there frustrated swearing at my child's crying made us feel very uncomfortable.
