"Armadale Hospital Emergency"

About: Armadale Hospital

(as the patient),

After the release media statement from the PM stating they are going to increase funding for people with eating disorders it was shocking to find they don't have beds in ER that lower enough to get onto.  I had to strip off lean back over the edge of the bed , while staff looked at my lower abdomen.   Would like to see all patients treated like this and see how they feel.  I know there are beds that can be lower I was on one at Fiona Stanley recently for my child.  The bed would not go lower than 80cm which when you have an injured knee and a swelling as large as a basket ball between your thighs and is hot and heavy and makes it difficult to walk this was an impossible task.  To add to this the Doctors English was limited and I could not understand him and he could not understand me, is this appropriate in ER when communication is vital for quick diagnosis.

Dear What can I say

Thank you for writing and sharing your Emergency Department (ED) experience with us, which I am sorry to hear was less than pleasant for you.

I am disappointed to hear that suitable arrangements were not made for you during your assessment. Whilst our trolleys in shared rooms are able to be lowered to a height of 48cm, there are occasions where the trolleys in our private rooms need to be used, and unfortunately these are unable to be lowered. Nevertheless, an alternate option should have been offered to you to make you more comfortable, such as a stool to sit on, and I apologise that this did not occur.

I have discussed this matter with our Nurse Unit Manager for the ED who is going to look into this further and address your concerns with the staff in the department. I would appreciate if you would consider contacting our Consumer Liaison Office on (08) 9391 1153 or AKG_ConsumerLiaison@health.wa.gov.au to provide further details of your experience to allow us to look into this more specifically.

Thank you again for bringing this matter to my attention, and I hope that you have recovered from your recent presentation.

Kind regards

Di Barr
