"Visit to Selby Lodge, this morning, with my neighbour and her dog, to see her husband."

About: Older Adult Mental Health Selby Lodge

(as a friend),

I would like to say a huge thank you to two staff on duty in "Blue" ward, who helped my neighbour plan this visit. The dog means everything to her husband and, before his illness, he spent hours taking the dog for walks and throwing the ball for her.

Last week, my neighbour's husband got very upset and angry when we all left with the dog, and he wanted to leave with us. It spoilt the visit for everyone, including staff who had to manage an angry man.

But this time, with the help of the two staff members, the visit went much better. They welcomed the dog (who loved the attention!) made tea and coffee for us and we spent time outside in the lovely little garden, where in spite of the heat, the dog played her favourite game  - chasing after balls!

When we had to leave, the staff members helped to distract my neighbour's husband so we could slip away. We can't thank them enough.

Dear earthyk89

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your experience at Selby/Lower West Mental Health Service. It is encouraging to hear that the care and attention that was provided to both yourself, your friend and her husband during your visit was compassionate and person centred. It is pleasing to note that your neighbour’s husband received joy and comfort from seeing and playing with their dog and I thank you for arranging this visit.

I will ensure that your positive feedback is shared with all the staff at Selby/Lower West Mental Health Service

Regards,

Roslyn Elmes, Executive Director, Mental Health, Public Health & Ambulatory Care, North Metropolitan Health Service
