A visiting Urologist informed my husband that he needed to have a prostate biopsy taken and that as it could not be done in our regional town, so it would have to be done in Perth. I queried this as I knew that in the recent past this procedure was routinely performed in our town. He reiterated that it was not now possible. We duly traveled 400 kms to Perth where the procedure was performed in the afternoon and we returned to our hometown the next day.
We subsequently queried why TRUS Prostate biopsies are no longer performed in our regional town and were informed that they are, however the attending Urologist insists on having radiology equipment that is unavailable in our town. My husband was never offered the opportunity to have the procedure done in our town, in fact he was repeatedly told it was not possible. We duly submitted the PATS form on our return to our hometown. We have now received a letter informing us we must provide a letter from the GP or the Urologist giving the reason we had to travel to Perth for this procedure.
