"Social Workers"

About: Royal Perth Hospital

(as the patient),

In my opinion the social workers at RPH (Royal Perth Hospital) act like gatekeepers and prevent patients from being able to access the Aboriginal Liaison Officer. I believe they have no cultural sensitivities and our mob are missing out on valuable assistance available to all other patients due to the attitude of the white women in that office!

I was sent down from Broome for tests. Broome Hospital informed me I would be given transport assistance through the Aboriginal Liaison Officer by finding them at the Social Workers counter. They denied my access to the ALO repeatedly and said I would get no assistance.

On a later date, some months later when I was again at RPH as support for a friend whose grandchild was undergoing major surgery - one of the women at the Social Workers counter, took one look at me and I believe became rude and failed to assist my friend in her enquiry after looking at me and saying, I know you. Purely because I was standing there.

Dear Bibbulmun Yorgah,

I am very sorry to hear of your recent experience accessing the Aboriginal Liaison Officer and social work support services at Royal Perth Hospital, it is not the level of service we aim to provide. It is disappointing to hear that you had difficulty accessing the Aboriginal Liaison Officers. To help us improve, Carla who leads the social work team is keen to hear your story and has asked that you contact her on 9224 2058.

I apologise again for your negative experience and hope that with your feedback we will be able to improve our services to the Aboriginal community.

Yours sincerely
