"Day surgery"

About: Royal Adelaide Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I believe I was discriminated against because of my disability and allergies - staff refused to let me reschedule the procedure so someone could come with me. They refused to arrange a translator, and then on the day wanted to cancel because they said that due to my disability I would not be able to get help if I went home and something went wrong. In my opinion that was a situation they created by not rescheduling, and it ignored the fact that I am perfectly capable despite my disability.

I believe I was also witness to staff laughing about my disability and allergies. The hospital insisted that I eat before I left, but had not told me in advance and did not have any food in the hospital that I was able to safely eat. Plus they would not let me leave after I had been cleared by the doctor to do so.

I was also yelled at by nurses when I tried to communicate this to them as they thought sign language was disrespectful and they insisted I could not be having an allergic reaction to the drugs used in the procedure and refused to provide treatment for same.

Even after I signed myself out, I was not allowed to leave, let alone get dressed, and when I left anyway, staff chased me out and physically trapped me.
