"Access to dermatology services in Karratha"

About: Karratha Health Campus

(as the patient),

I’ve just been told by the new Karratha Health Campus that I’ll need to wait six to eight months to see a dermatologist because my case is “non urgent”. I know that living remotely in WA’s north-west, we can’t expect to have the same level of access to medical resources, but in my opinion, that timeframe is unacceptable. I feel incredibly disappointed with this lack of support and timely access.

Dear Orangebd56,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback to WA Country Health Service (WACHS) Pilbara regarding your wait time to see a dermatologist. I understand your obvious frustration and hope I can provide some clarification as to the process.

The referral provided by your General Practitioner (GP) is received by the appropriate visiting specialist, in your case, the dermatologist. The dermatologist reviews the referral and assigns a triage score based on the information provided by the GP. All patients are assigned appointments based on this triage score.

At Karratha Health Campus, the dermatologist holds clinic every second month and is accompanied by a dermatological registrar. This allows us to provide more appointments and shorter wait-lists.
