"Still waiting for surgery"

About: Maroondah Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My husband presented to Maroondah Hospital on Saturday post saw injury to his right thumb. He was then transferred to the ward awaiting plastic surgery that was hopefully scheduled for the evening. Unfortunately due to other surgical priorities this did not go ahead. I can understand  there are other more demanding emergencies  that may present. Sunday he was fasted for surgery, again this did not occur. He was scheduled for surgery yesterday and after fasting all day this did not go ahead. He is currently fasting today and was told by the plastic surgeon that surgery would not be guaranteed as the hospital control the theatre lists  and that we could go ahead and make a complaint. My husband is a trades-person and requires his hands to make a living, so he doesn't really have a choice and has to wait for the surgery to occur and is at the mercy of the system. Our expectation is that surgery would have occurred by now and that he would be home recovering. In the meantime he remains on antibiotics and IV fluids. I am concerned about the viability of the structures to his thumb, as this is  a long time post injury and wish to resolve our dilemma. There are other things that I have observed that concern me, however my priority is for the surgery to occur in the first instance.

Dear Concerned for my husband

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your concerns regarding your husband getting the surgery he needed.

I would like to apologise that he didnt receive surgery the first time he was prepared for it, but as you say, at times there are patients who are more urgent than others. I have been informed he has now had his surgery and I trust it has gone well.

You have raised issues with our communication (or lack there of) which is so important for us to do better with. This will be reviewed by the Associate Program Director and Clinical Director for Plastic Surgery so we can do better here.

You have also mentioned you have other concerns that you have observed. I would welcome your feedback regarding this as well and would welcome you making contact with our Patient Relations Advisors in the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience by either email at feedback@easternhealth.org.au or by calling 1800 EASTERN.

Thank you again. We take both positive and not so positive feedback very seriously and hope you are able to make contact so we can continue to improve our care and services.

Best wishes and kind regards

David
