"The Palliative Care Facility"

About: Wantirna Health Wantirna Health / Palliative Care Inpatient Unit

(as a relative),

My mother-in-law passed away sooner than we expected. There was no discussion about arrangements. We spoke to them at 12.19am after they informed us she had died at 12.01 am with no empathy, and telling us we have four hours to remove her body! However after expressing disbelief at their statement, they extended it to 6 hours, which would be 6.01am on a Saturday. If this was done, they had pre-arranged agreements with the  funeral company for them to take the body.

There seemed to be no consideration in a palliative care facility that people die.

Her entire care regime was based around anti-psychotic medication and sedation despite the fact that she was not aggressive, agitated or otherwise difficult to manage. With her cancer it made her comfortable to stand then to sit and to repeat this process. This was considered agitation and the registrar believed this would lead to violent and aggressive behaviour. She was diagnosed only a week to the day before with pancreatic and liver cancer. I was sitting with her two days before she died when one of the nurses said she was going to give her something to calm her down. I said she is calm! In my opinion, this was an absolute manipulation to enforce a predetermined medication regime upon her.

Dear reticulumsg36

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on Patient Opinion regarding the care of your mother-in-law.

Please accept my condolences for your mother-in-law's death. I appreciate that this is a very difficult time for you and your family. It seems that the feedback that you have provided here is similar to the feedback that our Wantirna Health After Hours Coordinator received on Saturday morning.

We take all feedback very seriously and I have been advised by the Site Director for Wantirna Health that our Director of Nursing and Clinical Director Supportive and Palliative Care will be in contact following the feedback that was received on Saturday morning.

If you would prefer, and in order for us to undertake a full review of your mother-in-law's care, you can also contact our Patient Relations Advisor in the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience either via calling 1800 EASTERN or emailing feedback@easternhealth.org.au.

I trust our team will be able to connect with you at an appropriate time (via either way) so we can commence this review.

Thank you again and with kind regards

David
