"Lack of personal fridge at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as the patient),

As a patient with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), maintaining a healthy weight is difficult when feeling unwell in hospital. Previously at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital we had access to a small fridge in our room for personal use, such as storing snacks or extra meals. This helped with weight gain as we were able to consume extra food between hospital meal times. Most CF patients are admitted for a minimum of 2 weeks each time, so the fridges were well used during this period. The fridges have since ceased and we no longer have access. Personally, I actually lost weight the last time I was admitted, and I feel the lack of being able to store food and access additional snacks, due to not having a personal fridge in my room, contributed to this. Bring back the fridges!

Dear zuluee99,

Thank you very much for raising your concern about the lack of fridges available for Cystic Fibrosis patients to use. We have recently received other stories similar to yours and we are getting a group together to talk about whether there is anything further we can do. We will feedback to everyone that posted stories on Patient Opinion after that meeting.

The fridges which were available for CF patients were removed mostly due to concerns around safety issues relating to food storage. Changes to Food Safety guidelines and Infection Control policies meant that it was not possible to comply with the requirements for the management and monitoring of these fridges. There were also some challenges around the space in the rooms and making sure that staff were able to provide care safely.

As a result of your passion we will call a group together to revisit this, and I am hoping we could have some members of the CF community to be part of the problem solving strategy.

Kind regards,

Janet Zagari
