"Cardiac emergency"

About: Royal North Shore Hospital / Cardiothoracic surgery Royal North Shore Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I was (and still am) under the care of a Cardiologist with severe atrial fibrillation and cardiomyopathy.  The plan was to have an ICD (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator) implant in March, however my heart had other ideas!  Early one Saturday in February with a heart rate in the low 30's and great difficulty breathing my family called for an ambulance. The response was within 10 minutes. Trevor, Mel and Oli from the Artarmon Station were absolutely professional and fantastic. On arrival at Royal North Shore (RNS) Emergency there was already a team of doctors and nurses waiting for me in the Resuscitation Unit.  Although I don't remember too much about what went on, my husband and daughter witnessed an amazing medical team working together to restore my heart to some level of safety. I did have an ICD implant late in February and am now well on the road to recovery and having a normal healthy life. I can only attribute my good fortune firstly to the quick response of the ambulance, and the knowledgeable paramedics then supported by the amazing Emergency team at RNS.  All of this was further supported by the excellent nurses in  the Cardiac Ward 6D.  Thank you for saving my life.
