"Post Op Care"

About: Fremantle Hospital and Health Service

(as the patient),

No one contacted my husband after I had surgery. I asked twice that someone would. I needed a person with me, as I felt the nurse forgot about me post op.  He came under his own desperation from not hearing anything and reception made him wait 45 min before letting him through. He said 3 sets of family members were allowed to go straight through. When he did come, I was so anxious I needed to go home to a safe, quiet place.

I had a migraine post op, the noisy environment was not a good place to be forgotten about.  I realise nurses are busy, but to not call my husband left me without support and very anxious, which spiraled down given my situation.  A doctor said I could go home and sleep it off, but there were no nurses to take my cannula out.  We waited, and waited and walked around looking for a nurse before leaving.  Ironically, in my opinion, the unhelpful receptionist raised their voice that I still had a bung in and a nurse appeared to take it out as we left.  I went in at 6.30am, had surgery at 11am (not a big procedure) and when the change of shift at around 2pm came about, that seemed to be the end of care. I am home without any post op information which I realise is because of my anxious rapid departure.

Dear robinh94

I was sorry to hear of your post-operative experience and passed it on to our team at Fremantle Hospital. They were also disheartened to hear of your experience and would like to be able to investigate your situation. Without your specific details, we cannot investigate fully why this occurred and so help avoid a similar circumstance for another patient.

I encourage you to contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service on 6152 4013 or via email at FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au who will be able to investigate the issues you have raised.

I wish you all the best in your recovery

Neil Doverty

Update posted by robindh94 (the patient)

I emailed feedback to the hospital last week and am still waiting for a response. I only asked that pathology results are sent to the GP.
