"Opthamologist"

About: Prince of Wales Hospital / PB4 - Eye Clinic

(as the patient),

I was referred to the Prince of Wales (POW) Opthamologist Outpatients clinic from another POW Opthamologist whom I saw at Redfern Aboriginal Medical Centre a few weeks ago to have a procedure to see if I had a blocked tear duct. I saw the doctor  - Ghee first thing he said to me was why are your eyes so droopy? I said, you tell me. He then asked me why I was there and I said that I was referred to him by one of his colleagues to undergo a test to see if my tear duct was blocked. He didn't bother to read the referral and said that I didn't have a blocked tear duct and that I only had inflamed eyelids. So he didn't do the test. He just gave me a steroid cream to use which I have been using every night. The doctor kept asking me if I had any other medical problems. I said no, but from the look on his face, I felt he obviously didn't listen or believe me.  What did he want me to say?  Maybe if he bothered to read my referral letter from his colleague and my files he would have done the blocked tear duct procedure which was the main reason I was there for.  He wanted me to come back for a retina scan, but I didn't go because felt like he was very dismissive of my concerns and I don't trust him anywhere near my eyes now. I believe the steroid cream has made no difference. I am now considering writing a complaint to the Australian Medical Association (AMA) about this experience. I won't be going back there and have asked the Aboriginal Medical Service to follow up with my concerns.

Dear Koorieboy

Thank you for this feedback. I am terribly sorry that your condition has not improved, and you did not feel like you were being listened to by your ophthalmologist.

We would very much like to continue your treatment at the eye clinic. Should you wish to do so, please forward your contact details to the email address below to my attention and I will arrange a review.

mailto:toSESLHD-GeneralManager-POWHSSEH@health.nsw.gov.au

Kind regards

Alan
