"Wonderful Care at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter is heavily pregnant and has crushed discs in her spine. She was recently admitted through Charlie Gairdner ED.

The previous day she had spent 7 hours at King Edward Hospital after flying down from Kalgoorlie for scheduled appointments. Nobody was where they were supposed to be, she was handballed from doctor to doctor and clinic to clinic and nothing was actually accomplished apart from a baby scan which could have been organised in Kalgoorlie. She left King Edward Hospital in pain and very distressed.

I advised her to present to Sir Charles Gairdner ED the following day. She was seen by a young doctor called Jacob in ED who took everything she said seriously. He treated her with kindness and respect and dignity. He checked with his colleagues and ran thorough checks and made sure she got the medication she needed to return to Kalgoorlie.

My daughter and I would like to thank him very much. My daughter has requested I write this on her behalf. Thank you again Jacob, you are doing a wonderful job and we appreciate it and thank you to all the staff at Sir Charles Gairdner who treated my daughter.

Dear Kalgoorlie mother,

Thank you for taking the time to share the gratitude of you and your daughter for the care she recently received at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

We aim to treat all patients with kindness, respect and dignity and I will share your compliment with the ED team, including Jacob. I am delighted that your daughter received the treatment she required to manage her pain and return safely to Kalgoorlie.

I wish you daughter well with the rest of her pregnancy and birth.

Kind regards,

Janet Zagari

Dear Kalgoorlie mother,

Thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns regarding your daughter’s recent experience with the King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH).

The Women and Newborn Health Service strives to provide quality, patient-centered care and I regret that this was not your daughter’s experience with our service on this occasion.

I am sorry that your daughter left her scheduled appointments at KEMH and after making the long trip from Kalgoorlie she was still feeling distressed and experiencing pain. So that I can have this matter investigated thoroughly for you, can I ask you to contact the Customer Service Unit on 6458 1444 or kemhcsu@health.wa.gov.au to provide your contact details? We will then conduct a review of the matters stated in your post which, regrettably, caused distress for your daughter. We will then contact you to provide you with the outcomes of the review and to notify you of any changes and improvements made to the way we deliver our service.

I would like to thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention.

Jodi Graham
