"My positive interaction with the WA Health System"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Burns Department & Ward 4B Goomalling Health Service

(as the patient),

Recently I was on a friend’s farm in the Western Australian Wheatbelt region.

I tripped and fell into a campfire, badly burning the palm of my left hand.

The care I received from the three nursing staff at Goomalling District Hospital was exceptional.

While I was experiencing my most vulnerable moment, their professional care, compassion and kindness reassured me that everything was going to be ok.

I witnessed absolute dedication to their profession and commitment by these three ladies, to providing the highest level of care for their patient.

Apart from the necessary medical treatment and dressing of my burn, their advice, support and empathy really meant the world to me.

The staff at the Burns Clinic at Fiona Stanley Hospital have equally been truly remarkable.

Lee who has been washing and dressing my burn every two days for the last couple of weeks has been incredible.

It’s often commented that it takes a certain person to sign up to be a nurse and I know many serve without accolade, but they deserve every bit of praise and recognition for the outstanding people they are

The specialists at Fiona Stanley Hospital have noted the initial care I received in Goomalling is largely responsible for the good long-term prognosis.

Dear Burnt hand,

The Burns Service of WA strives to ensure that regardless of where you live, you receive high quality, evidenced based burns care. It is wonderful to hear feedback about this process in action. We really appreciate the work of our rural and remote colleagues – their prompt first aid, assessment, and early referral ensure that we can together achieve the best outcome we can for each person following their burn injury. I have passed your feedback onto our clinic staff who were very pleased to receive your feedback and were glad to hear that your experience was such a positive one.

Many thanks for your kind comments.

Neil Doverty

Executive Director
