"My child's broken arm"

About: Hedland Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I took my child to emergency at Hedland Health Campus one afternoon recently, they took us straight through for an x-ray and some pain relief for my child and then sent us back out to wait which was fine.

Once my child got called through the doctor came and saw them and had looked at the x-ray and said yep my child had a hairline fracture. Showed me the x-ray pointed out that single fracture and told us to keep it in a sling and come back the following week for the fracture clinic. For pain, Nurofen and panadol etc. was given and sent us home.

A week later we have had my child's fracture clinic appointment, to be then told it is a whole lot worse than what we were originally told in the ED.

And that it was the report that told them so! So my child had been suffering in pain and not in a cast etc. for a week and their injury could have been worse.

I am so disappointed, the reports come back within 24 hrs, why were we not called to take my child in and have some sort of plaster cast put on it? Why were we not informed of any of this earlier? The doctor at the fracture clinic seemed shocked we didn't know the full severity and figured we already knew.

So my poor little child had to suffer for a week and was at risk of making their injury even worse. Yes the ED doctor only saw what they did, that's fine but once they got the report why wasn't it followed up? My child's arm could have been even worse after a week. And my child is now in a full arm cast and then has to wear a sling for 8 weeks because of this. Not very confident with the system at all.

Dear falcontz59,

I am sorry to hear that your child was injured and in pain, I do hope they are now more comfortable, and recovering. I’d also like to apologise that your experience at the Hedland Emergency Department and Fracture Clinic has caused you more distress at this difficult time, and I want to understand how we can do better.

I can assure you that we are looking in to the matter as thoroughly as we can, without knowing the specific presentation to review. If you wish us to look in to the specifics of your case, you can contact Louise Steedman, Operations Manager on WACHS-Pilbara.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au, or 9174 1038. I will provide a further response when we have reviewed our processes to see if we can identify what has happened and what we can do differently next time.

Thank you for taking the time to describe your experience at the Hedland Health Campus. We greatly value your feedback as this helps us to do better and provide a health system in which our patients can feel secure and confident.

Kind regards,

Margi
