"Unhappy with care at Emergency Department"

About: Merredin Health Service

(as the patient),

1. Attendance at Merredin Hospital Emergency with a broken foot, despite my request the doctor would not request an X-ray. I was told it was not worth an emergency x-ray. The foot remained very sore. Went to a different hospital and received excellent care.

2. Attendance at Merredin Hospital Emergency with a very sore and swollen knee (about 6 weeks ago). I could not straighten my leg. I cannot quite yet. I was told it was not worth an emergency x-ray. Eventually saw my GP and got an X-ray referral. Now waiting. Possible complications due to delay.

I believe both events have cost the government and me a lot of money.

Dear plutomz47

Thank you for taking the time to write your story. I am sorry to read of your experience with our service.

WA Country Health Service Wheatbelt prides itself on providing safe, high quality patient centred care and your experiences are not reflective of these service standards.

All patients presenting to our Emergency Departments are to be assessed and where appropriate individual patient care plans including investigations (ie: medical imaging) developed by the treating clinical team and followed accordingly. This includes staff listening to the patient’s ongoing concerns.

Your report is very concerning and we would welcome the opportunity to discuss your experience in more detail. We need to understand what has occurred and why this has happened, with the intention to follow this up directly with the staff involved to ensure that there is no recurrence.

I would appreciate it, if you would please contact Karen Horsley, Operations Manager Eastern Wheatbelt on (08) 9081 3222 or email: Karen.horsley@health.wa.gov.au. Alternatively you can contact Carolynne Ryan, Consumer Feedback and Patient Opinion Coordinator on (08) 9621 0708 or email: Carolynne.ryan@health.wa.gov.au. Your call would be welcome and the issues can still be addressed anonymously if you wish.

Thank you again for getting in touch and please be assured of our commitment to address the issues you have raised.

Kind regards

Sean
