About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital

(as the patient),

THIS STORY IS A FOLLOW UP TO A PREVIOUS STORY.

READ PREVIOUS STORY HERE.

I wrote my previous story while I was in a state of distress and in circumstances where I was confused about what was going on.  Notwithstanding that what I wrote contained certain inaccuracies, especially relating to my surgeon, I appreciated the surgeon contacting me about my experience and I appreciated his explaining to me what was going on in terms of surgery time and waiting for a theatre.  I was told the surgeon was operating while I waited and that was not so, the surgeon too was waiting.  I also now understand, after having read numerous papers on the procedure I underwent, why I was waiting and that time was not as crucial as I understood it to be at the time I wrote my previous story. I have also undergone another surgery - where every second was critical and my experience was very different.  In that case, I was prioritised and I was operated on promptly.

I have now been operated on 3 times at the Sydney Eye Hospital for a detached retina and complications.  The medical treatment I have received and the care and skill of my surgeon have been incredible - I say this now without the weight of anxiety.

My experience is now completely different to what I wrote about.  After that second operation, I developed complications and lost sight again.  I had read about that and I did not think I had much chance of regaining sight.  My surgeon saw me and in a few hours I was being operated on.  The surgeon expressed confidence in remedying the complication.  The complication was remedied.  My vision is not great but it is functional and I am hopeful of further improvement.  Further, the surgeon's level of care has been exceptional.  I feel somewhat embarrassed about some of the comments I previously made. Although I do feel there is a lot of room to improve the patient experience during the wait for surgery.

I should also say that the nursing staff in the recovery wards has also been fantastic.

Dear Blinded by inaction,

I appreciate you taking the time to follow up on Patient Opinion from your previous story. With the prospect of the possible loss of your vision, it is understandable that you would be very anxious before your surgery and concerned about any delays. I am pleased that your recent experience has been positive and I am grateful for your compliments toward the surgeon and nursing staff.

Your feedback continues to be valuable and I hope your vision continues to improve.

Kind regards

Pauline

Director of Clinical Services
